Color Myths: “Seasonal Dressing”
“Wear dark colors in the winter and light colors in the summer. That’s all that’s available anyway.”
Fact: Every Season has dark, pastel, bright, and neutral colors encapsulated in the palette, in keeping with the palette’s characteristics (warm, cool, soft, clear). You have a wide range of colors that suit you, and you can be festive, beachy, moody, and breezy all within your palette.
Don’t phone in your shopping! You wanted a color analysis so that you could stop settling for whatever’s “good enough” and instead, bring intention and purpose to your shopping pursuits.
If you don’t see your colors on any given day while out shopping, you can draw one of two conclusions:
Your shopping strategies are stale, or
You can save your money for another day.
Not all neutrals are created equal. Purchase your season’s neutrals for the most versatility.
A Spring brown coat is the perfect backdrop for scarves, hats, and gloves in your brights!
There are tangible financial benefits to shopping in your season’s palette year round.
When you own clothing in colors that can only be worn 3-4 months out of the year, you risk positioning yourself to need to replace large swaths of your closet at the same time, should any of the follow occur at any point:
⚠️ You change sizes (this is normal and should be expected!)
⚠️ Your tastes or preferences change
⚠️ Your needs change, or…
…You get so sick of wearing the same 12 things for 3 months straight, that you donate it all at the end of the season in a fit of rage and apathy.
Before long, you’ll find yourself replacing your seasonal wardrobe…every season. Meaning, you are left in a pinch every 3-4 months, head to the store to “stock up” on a season’s worth of whatever is readily available -
❌ Not what excites you and inspires you
❌ Not what thoughtfully fills a long-term gap in your closet
❌ Not quality pieces that you can enjoy for years to come
- but pieces that are “just okay”, get the job done, and cover your nakedness. The thrill of the buy wears off soon, and before you know it, the weather changes and you shove it all into a bin for next year.
This is not sustainable!
Instead, shop less and wear your clothes more by opting for your colors, year-round.
Imagine cotton blouses with shorts in the summer, and then layered under sweater dresses in the fall.
You could slay in leather shorts with sandals in the spring, and with tights and boots in the winter.
Picture yourself rocking a chunky sweater with jeans and a scarf in October, and then with cutoffs and sneakers in April.
This isn’t a Pinterest fairy tale - it’s the way a sustainable, smart wardrobe should function. And it’s how my clients use their wardrobes every day, every month, and every year.
