Why Shopping Feels So Stressful (Hint: It's Not *Just* The Prices)
Let's talk about your shopping dread.
As soon as you realize you need to go shopping, you’re dreading it. Before you even walk through the mall doors, you’re anxious. You probably head straight for the sale rack, find the least offensive things to try on, and buy whatever fits for as little money as possible.
You've probably chalked all of that up to being busy. Or frugal. Or "just not a shopping person."
Here's what I think is actually going on: your body is trying to wake you up to a profound values misalignment between you and the clothes you’re accustomed to buying.
Your body knows before your mind does.
The dread, the anxiety, the overwhelm. It’s your body trying to get your attention.
Avoidance is information, my friend. When you can't bring yourself to make time to shop, when the laundry sits there for months, when you cap every purchase at whatever price feels "safe" — that's not a personality quirk. That's your body creating friction on purpose, hoping you'll notice what’s actually wrong:
At some point, shopping stopped being about communication and started being about not getting caught.
Celebrity & influencer culture has turned your closet into a cover-up
Think about your motivations for choosing what you choose. Really think about it.
Are you buying clothes to simply be not-naked? Are you scanning for The Right Things — the pieces that prove you're keeping up, that you know what's in, that resemble what you see most often online?
If so, that's not really shopping. That's damage control.
And when we’re in damage control mode, it’s very difficult to access authenticity or joy.
We've been sold the idea — by celebrities, by influencers, by a hundred thousand "get the look for less" posts — that our relevance is one outfit away from being confirmed or revoked. So we treat every purchase like it might be the thing that finally redeems us. And when we treat something like life or death, of course it's stressful. Of course you avoid it. Of course you do whatever you can to get through it unscathed.
Clothes aren't too expensive. There aren’t too many options. Your body is creating discomfort to get your attention.
You say you value authenticity. Your closet says something else.
This is the part I'm not going to soften for you, because I don't think you'd want me to.
You say you value authenticity — but you have zero connection to the clothes you put on your body. You say you value honesty — but you get frustrated when The Right Things you want to be seen in have price tags that aren’t aligned with your budget. You say you value connection — but the people around you mostly see you low-key stressed and self-conscious.
I get it. It shouldn’t matter what we wear. Who we are on the inside is what truly matters. But if you’re honest with yourself, what you put on your body is affecting you on the inside. How you acquire your clothing is affecting you on the inside.
So, that gap between what you say and what you do? That's not failure. That's simple conditioning. Judging it won’t fix it, action will. And here’s the best news: it can be turned around quickly.
It's time for a change — and you don't have to guess your way there.
You don't need more money to love shopping, you need to intentionally redirect your efforts toward authenticity. Only then will your nervous system release the threat it feels and stop fighting against every minute and every dollar you spend on your clothes. So, how do we start?
We can only start from where you are right now, today. Not only is it the most convenient place to start, it’s the IDEAL place to start.
That's exactly what the Style Journey Matchmaker Quiz is for. It's two minutes — genuinely two minutes — and it'll show you your exact starting point in my system, and match you to the aligned action step built for where you are and what you need now.
A clear path is waiting for you.
No second-guessing, no unnecessary steps.
Here's what I don't want you to miss: you don't have to keep shopping like you're hiding something.
Take the quiz, find your starting point, and let's get you feeling like YOU again!
