the top 4 items i want to see in your closet

No two wardrobes are exactly alike, but, more often than not, I notice 4 key components that are missing from my clients’ closets. These items always make the shopping list; maybe you need them on yours.

structured jackets

No matter your style archetypes, Season, or body architecture, a structured jacket is the key ingredient to any killer outfit. Here are a few ideas for what you might try next.

Naturals and Classics need a timeless denim jacket. Charmings and Playfuls look at home in cropped blazers. Dangerous and Romantic gals get that good feeling in a moto jacket. Expressives and Streetwises can pull off that oversized blazer look.

quality basic tees

When I say quality, I don’t mean expensive! I often see drawers full of tees, but none of them are designated to wear out of the house. They’re faded, a little stained, used for working out or sleeping, and often thrown on with leggings to run errands. Treat yourself to some new tees in neutral colors, and take care of them so that they can pull their weight in your outfits.

a patterned skirt

Skirts are the unsung heroes of a creative and inspiring wardrobe. Often relegated to the ho-hum black-and-gray drudgery of a formal work wardrobe, the skirt category has so much potential for outfit greatness. While a patterned skirt can make a statement, it can also be the jeans alternative you’ve been looking for all this time.

Skirt aficionados might find new heights in trying this season’s trending patterns like gingham, peppers, or a textural floral wrap style. But if you’re new to the skirt game, you can’t go wrong with a leopard print midi skirt, like this one.

Pro tip: try it with your quality tee and structured jacket.

special jewelry

I see you guys with your old jewelry from high school, college, and your wedding, not really wearing any of it, and feeling bored with your look. Jewelry is the secret sauce to looking put together, and yet it’s a frequently neglected component in women’s daily routines. I double dare you to buy some new jewelry INSTEAD of a new top next time you go shopping and see what happens.

Here are a few of my go-to brands for the different archetypes. Remember, Summers and Winters do best in silver-toned metals, and Autumns and Springs do best in gold tones.

Naturals: Madewell, Dauphinette
Classics: Ann Taylor, Talbots
Playfuls: J. Crew, Wild Card (Pittsburgh local!)
Expressives: Sasha Handmade, Closet Rehab (both Pittsburgh locals!)
Romantics: Deepa Gurnani, Kendra Scott
Charmings: Kate Spade, Gorjana
Streetwise: BaubleBar, David Yurman
Dangerous: AllSaints, John Hardy
